Three Suggestions for a Great 4th of July Party

If you're hosting a 4th of July party, having a well-planned schedule of activities and games is essential to keep everyone engaged and entertained before the fireworks show. This will ensure a fun-filled celebration for all.

Create a 4th of July Wreath for Your Door.

A wreath with red artificial roses hanging from a door

Hang a wreath on your front door that the children and you created yourselves. This craft can usually be completed in one afternoon, adds a festive touch to your home, and is a fun project for children and adults to do together. Here’s what’s needed:

  • A wreath, grapevine, or another style of your choice
  • Nine wooden stars or roses
  • Red, white, and blue acrylic paint
  • Red, white, and blue ribbon about two inches wide and at least three- yards of each color
  • Red, white, and blue paint pens (optional)
  • Paintbrush
  • A glue gun with glue sticks
  • A small American Flag

Paint three red, blue, and white wooden stars and allow them to dry. Then, braid the red, white, and blue ribbon through the wreath and tie it at the bottom with a bow. Braid all the colors through the wreath and then tie the bow using all three colors.

Next, arrange the stars on the wreath in a way that you find visually appealing. Start by gluing three stars at the top, close together. Then, glue the remaining stars at the four and eight o’clock positions on the wreath, spacing them to your liking. You can also arrange them in a specific order, starting with the red star, then the white star, and ending with the blue star in each bunch. You can glue the stars to the ribbons if it's more convenient. Just make sure they are firmly attached to the wreath.

Use the paint pens to write “God Bless America” on the top stars using the white pen on the red star, the blue pen on the white star, and the red pen on the blue star. This personal touch adds a sense of pride and accomplishment to your creation. Allow the words to dry before hanging the wreath.
Hang an American Flag in the center of the wreath to set it off nicely. Glue the stem to the side of the wreath to stay in place.

Check out some Fun 4th of July Games.

Plan to play these games with a patriotic theme.

Balloon Pass

This game involves relaying a balloon down a line of people. Use red, white, and blue balloons, and tell the participants they will be using their hands and legs to pass the balloon down the line. Create two teams of people and line them up in straight lines. Give the first person a balloon and tell them to put it between their legs, passing it to the next person in line with their legs only. That person will pass the balloon to the next person by putting it over their head. That third person will put the balloon between their legs and pass it to the next person. The game continues until the balloon has passed down the line. If you have a small group, the balloon must be passed down the line and back again before declaring a winner.

Chalk I Up

Pick a panel of judges (probably, the oldest participants are best) and have them become the official judges for a chalk contest. Break your guests into two teams (or more, depending on how many people are at the party) and give them each one or two containers of sidewalk chalk. Tell them to create a sidewalk picture that shows something patriotic, and tell them the flag must be included in the image. Give them a time limit (depending on your group, this time limit might range from 10 to 45 minutes), and then have the judges declare a winner after carefully examining all the artwork. You could have art-themed prizes for the winners.

Have a Parade

One fun activity that screams "4th of July!" is a parade with decorated bikes, scooters, and the like. Ask everyone who comes to the party to decorate their bike scooter or other item in patriotic garb. You can have people bring them to the party already decorated and have a contest for "best bike," etc., but also fun is to have a decorating party within the party. Have all the items to decorate the bikes, scooters, and skateboards. You might have streamers, banners, flags, and ribbons. The children and adults can decorate their bikes and scooters as a party activity.

Host a Guessing Game

These are popular for just about any occasion. Fill a large jar with peppermint candy (the red and white striped) and decorate it with blue and red ribbon. Have people guess how many candies are in the jar (which means you count as you place the candies in the jar). The winner, or the person who comes closest to the number without going over, gets the candy jar.

Fireworks

If you're having fireworks at home, you might have a big box of assorted fireworks. Everyone has favorites, and people might have clear ideas of what they want to see and hear. You can play a game to determine who gets to pick the next firework to go off next. You might ask trivia questions (why are there 13 stars on the flag?). Or you can have a dance-off. While music plays in the background, each person who wants to pick the next firework to go off has to dance the craziest, silliest dance they can come up with. Someone designated a judge will decide who won the dance, and that person will get to pick the next fireworks item. Unless there are more fireworks than people, everyone can choose once.
